Large Size Treasury Or Coin Notes were printed from 1878 to 1923 in the United States, as part of its circulation of paper currency. The Large Size Treasury Or Coin Notes were initially redeemable in the same face value of silver dollar coins, and later in raw silver bullion. Because of their significance in US history and rarity, Large Size Treasury/Coin Notes have become increasingly collectible and valuable. 

A portrait of Edwin M. Stanton, Abraham Lincoln’s Secretary of War, appears on the $1.00 denomination.

One of the most interesting of the large size type notes are the Treasury or Coin Notes which were issued between 1890 and 1891. Importantly, these notes were redeemable in silver or gold coin.

Colonial Note Collections -- How and Why

One of the most exciting and totally intuitive ways to launch a currency collection set is to “begin” with the beginning of our great nation. So many new collectors are deciding to build a personal and historical collection by creating an heir-loom group of colonial notes. Because all 13 original colonies initiated their own currency notes, numismatists young and old are still able to “acquire” and put together a collection of notes from all 13 of the original colonies, for less money than you might think.

Though the perception is that these notes are of a premium price, collectors are still able to find and purchase notes from all 13 colonies, PLUS the rare and sought after Continental Currency,  for a relatively fair price. Once the original collection is in place, these collectors will adjust, upgrade, and “fine-tune” their collections by seeking notes with higher grades. IS THIS A COUNTERFEIT NOTE?

Is this note 'legit' he asked?

We  have just received a message from an interested buyer for one of my graded currency notes. Here is his question:

"I am very interested in purchasing this note. I am worried, though, that the note may be counterfeit. A friend of mine just spent a lot of money on a counterfeit note and got burned. How can I be sure this note is legit?"

Here is my reply:

Thank you so much for your interest in this beautiful and extremely rare note.

Your query is an excellent one. Probably the most important reason to have a coin or note graded is for the simple reason of the thousands of counterfeit copies. 

Thus, it is ALWAYS risky to purchase any ungraded currency item! That is why we, with just a few rare exceptions, only sell GRADED notes. Please notice that this note ABOVE has been authenticated [graded] by the PMG [PAPER MONEY GRADING] grading organization. PMG is the world leader in grading/authenticating world paper money. I recommend going to their web site (just do a google search for PMG grading) to learn more about this industry leader. 

Please also notice the official and unique PMG certificate number that has been assigned to this note (located on the back of the grading banner and written into the item's description section). Again, PMG has placed their “mark” and their reputation on the authenticity of this note. As quoted from their web site information, “PMG will not grade notes that are counterfeit, are of questionable authenticity or have been altered.”

That is why you can be certain that this note we are selling is authentic – because PMG has placed its official stamp of approval upon the note. Having a note graded is a costly, lengthy process but well worth it for both buyers and sellers. Importantly, the note’s value (for both buyer and seller) is increased through this grading process.

Arkansas US Military Veterans and MPC Currency Notes

Nearly 15% of civilian adults in our base state of Arkansas are US Military Veterans. Importantly, this veteran population includes the Treasuredstocks.com President who, as a young Wisconsin teen, joined the US Navy!

If you are a military Veteran from the Vietnam War

ar era or earlier, the chances of you having and using Military Payment Certificates – MPCs -- is huge!

As a military veteran of the US Navy, Jeff Smith recalls receiving his pay with Military Payment Certificates and spending these MPCs at the base PX. These beautifully engraved Military Payment Certificates are some of most artistic pieces of currency ever made.  

The United States military devised the MPC program immediately following WWII. In post war Europe, US dollars became very valuable due to the high inflation rates of local currencies. Hence, US servicemen stationed overseas could purchase high value items for relatively small numbers of US dollars. To overcome this problem and help stabilize foreign economies, MPCs were developed and used from the time immediately following World War II until about the end of the Vietnam War  (1946 - 1973). 

MPCs include some of the most beautiful currency notes the US has ever printed. When you look at these currency notes, you see not only the financial impact they made, but also the military, political and social environments surrounding them. They are paper money in cent denominations of 5, 10, 25 and 50 and dollar denominations of 1, 5, 10, and 20. 

If you’re a Viet Nam Era Vet, here’s a neat statistic: The MPC program was at its peak during the Vietnam War.

What is a Star - Replacement Note?

What is a STAR note?

So what is a “STAR” note, you may ask. For your possible interest and information, here is a brief description

Because of their rarity (only about 1% of notes), star notes are valuable and very collectible. It is very easy to “discover” star notes because you will easily see a star (*) at the beginning (e.g. legal tender notes and Silver Certificates) or the end (e.g. Federal Reserve Notes) of the note’s serial number. 

The BEP (Bureau of Engraving and Printing) prints star notes as replacements for mis-printed and defective currency. This is a very efficient way for BEP to maintain correct currency counts (numerical sequencing) without having to completely reprint the misprinted notes and the number of batched currency items remains the same. 

Importantly, though they replace misprinted currency notes, star notes (at least not since 1910) have their own sequential serial numbers, starting at 00000001. 

Thus, star notes are sometimes referred to as replacement notes because star notes ‘replace’ currency that has been damaged during production.
